How To Find A Water & Plumbing Leak In Your Home

Those pesky little water leaks can be very sneaky, lurking in your home without you even noticing. Until, water damage starts show up in some very odd places.

“Our homes rely on water—as long as its safely contained in a pipe, sink, tub, or appropriate appliance, like a dishwasher. But water can fast become the enemy if it goes where it shouldn’t, potentially damaging a home’s structure or furnishings. Plumbing leaks, unfortunately, are pretty common, even in newer houses, and it’s likely that every house will suffer from at least one. What’s more, not all leaks are obvious; in fact, they can be awfully insidious, making it crucial to catch and repair a leak as soon as possible.” Bob Villa

Be proactive by knowing how to find a water leak in your home

Monitor the water bill

A higher than usual water bill is typically a sign of a water leak. The Environmental Protection Agency indicates that a family of four uses about 12,000 gallons of water a month. If your water bill goes over 3,000 gallons of water per person living in the home, you will want to look further for a water leak.

Watch the water meter

If you suspect a water leak, a good place to start is by checking the water meter. Usually located near the street or back of the home, near the main water supply to the home.

With all the water using appliances turned off and nobody is using the water in the home, check to see if the flow indicator on the water meter is registering. If all the water is off it should not be moving. Read the meter and come back in about an hour, if there isn't any water usage in the home the meter should read the same, if the meter has increased, it indicates a leak.

Taking a proactive approach to the health of your pipes can save you hundreds and even thousands of dollars in repairs.  Having your plumbing annually inspected by the professionals at the Leak Doctor is a great way to get started.
