How Much Is Your Water Leak Costing You?

Detecting water leaks in your Central Florida home or business not only saves you money, it reduces the damaging effects of water, and conserves our natural resource.

How much water does the average household water here in Central Florida?

According to Wego Wire, Efficient Buildings, household water waste can add up to millions of gallons!

Average household leaks can add up to over 10,000 gallons of water a year, enough water to wash 270 loads of laundry. Nationally, household water waste totals over a trillion gallons - or the equivalent of 11 million households' yearly usage. The most common types of leaks at the household level are worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and leaky showerheads. 10% of US homes waste over 90 gallons a day just from these small fixtures. Here are some quick facts:

1 Faucets: 1 drip/second adds up to over 3,000 gallons a year (you can take 180 showers with that water!)

2 Speaking of showers… a showerhead leaking at 10 drips/minute wastes over 500 gallons a year (that’s 60 loads of dishes)

3 Old inefficient toilets can water up to 13,000 gallons a year

4 Irrigation leaks just the size of a dime will waste nearly 6,300 gallons a month

What can a home or business owner do to conserve water?

The first thing a home or business owner can do is to inspect all exposed plumbing pipes.  This includes under the sink, toilets, water heater, and outside water hoses.

The second, look for any signs of a water leak. This includes, the sound of running water when all the water using appliances are turned off, and checking for any moisture under the sink. Test the toilet by placing food color in the tank, if after a few minutes the water in the toilet bowl chances color, it indicates a leak. Also, check the water meter, it should not be registering when all the water in the home is off, and look for warm flooring, or peeling paint.

The third, if you suspect a water leak in your home or business but are not able to find it, contact a professional leak detection service. In the end it will save you time and money!
