Frozen Pipes and Hidden Water Leaks in the Atlanta Area

It’s never a good time to have plumbing issues or a water leak. But with the temperatures dropping here in the Atlanta area many home and business owners are experiencing leaking pipes.

Just like any other appliance or system in your home, your plumbing needs maintenance to perform at its best.

Protect Your Pipes From The Cold

The cold weather can wreck havoc on your plumbing pipes. The change in temperature can cause the ground to shift, causing pinhole leaks or even bursts.

Make sure you insulated  or wrap all exposed pipes or those located in unheated areas. Such as in the garage, crawl space, basement, and even the attic.

If the temperatures are going to drop below freezing, you may want to turn your faucets on just a little. A slow drip will keep water moving through the pipes and prevent them from freezing and bursting, which can be disastrous.

To keep heat inside your home, make sure the garage door stays closed. Preventing any exposed pipes from getting too cold.

Leave the cabinet doors open in the bathroom and kitchen. This will heat from the home to circulate and warm up exposed pipes.

Make sure you know there the main water shut off Is located, just in case your pipes freeze and burst.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution, “If your home is built on a slab, your shutoff valve is probably near your hot water tank. If you have a basement, you'll probably find your shutoff valve there. And if your home is built on a crawl space, the valve will probably be located there, under the front wall of your house. If all else fails, you can also shut the water off at the city water line's covered box near the front of your home.”

Weather plays a huge role of your plumbing system. Freezing temperatures allow the water inside pipes to freeze, as the water expands it causes significant pressure, which can lead to cracks length way down the pipe or small leaks at the joints.

“Pipes burst because of the pressure that's exerted when water freezes. It can exceed 2,000 pounds per square inch, so it's no match for metal or plastic pipes, which will burst under this extreme pressure.” AJC.

If you find yourself with a higher than normal water bill, low water pressure, a musty odor, or the sound of running water, you probably have a water leak somewhere in your home.
