Even minor swimming pool leaks can cause substantial damage and result in huge water bills and it is estimated that one pool in every 20 has a leak. Just how serious can a leak become? A pinhole-sized leak in a pool plumbing system with 40-pound pressure (psi) will lose approximately 970 gallons of water in a 24-hour period. This comes to about 30,000 gallons a month or 360,000 gallons per year. That’s enough to drain and refill the average residential swimming pool more than a dozen times.

Luckily, there are easy steps you can take today to preserve our water supply in the future.

TOP 10 TIPS TO HELP YOU CONSERVE WATER

1.  Survey your property to find leaks and make any necessary repairs.
2. Check your meter daily and keep a log so you know if your water usage dramatically increases, which is a sign of a leak.
3. Plant a drought-resistant landscape and water only in the morning or evening when wind and evaporation are lowest.
4. Check the water supply system for leaks and turn off unnecessary flows.
5. Shut off the water supply and water circulation to equipment and areas that are unused.
6. 6) Check water pressure.  Where system pressure is higher than 60 psi, install pressure –reducing valves.
7. Use water efficient machines that are air cooled rather than water cooled.
8. Adjust the boiler and cooling tower blow down rate to maintain TDS at levels recommended by manufacturer’s specifications.
9. Install automatic shut-off faucets
10. Communicate your water conservation plan at meetings and in newsletters.
